Winter Is Coming: Preparing for Dormancy (BYOB)

November 19 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Most bonsai don’t die in summer. They die in winter, from the wrong kind of care.

San Antonio winters are mild most of the time, until a hard freeze blows in overnight. That mix confuses a lot of growers. Temperate trees like elms, junipers, and pines need a real winter rest to stay healthy. Tropicals like ficus need protection the minute temperatures drop. Treat them the same way and one group will suffer.

In this evening workshop, we’ll go over what dormancy is, which of your trees need it, and how to get them through a South Texas winter. We’ll talk about watering when trees aren’t actively growing, when to stop feeding, how to protect roots during a freeze, and what to do with tropicals when a cold front is on the way. Winter is also the best time to look closely at structure on deciduous trees, so we’ll use the bare branches to plan spring work.

This is a BYOB class: Bring Your Own Bonsai. Bring up to three (3) trees from your collection, and we’ll help you make a winter plan specific to that tree and to where it lives at your house.
